Job Type: 8:30am - 4pm
Location: Wandsworth
Salary: £96-£110
The Role: Special Needs Teaching Assistant – Wandsworth
As a SEN Teaching Assistant, you will be a crucial part of each pupil’s learning journey, providing classroom-based and personal support to ensure all pupils access education in a safe, supportive, and engaging environment.
Working under the guidance of class teachers and alongside therapists and care staff, you’ll support children who may face significant barriers to learning due to sensory and physical challenges. Your role is highly varied – some days you’ll be helping a pupil access tactile learning materials or guiding them during mobility practice, while on others you’ll be supporting sensory exploration, specialist communication systems, or structured play.
Whether you're adapting classroom resources, delivering one-to-one support, assisting with therapy sessions, or providing personal care, your empathy and resilience will help create a truly inclusive environment where every student can thrive.
A Special Needs Teaching Assistant will be expected to:
- Support the learning and development of pupils with visual, sensory, and physical impairments
- Assist with adapted learning resources, including braille, large print, tactile objects, and visual aids
- Provide one-to-one and small group support to reinforce learning and encourage engagement
- Work collaboratively with class teachers, care staff, therapists, and external professionals
- Assist with personal care, including toileting, feeding, dressing, and mobility support as required
- Facilitate communication using a variety of specialist strategies
- Supervise pupils during break and lunch times, promoting positive social interaction and safe play
- Contribute to planning, assessments, and reviews by observing and recording pupil progress
- Help maintain a calm, inclusive, and stimulating classroom environment
- Follow safeguarding, health & safety, and behaviour management policies and procedures at all times
- Participate in training and professional development, including manual handling and communication support techniques
Qualifications and requirements – Special Needs Teaching Assistant – Wandsworth
- Experience in a SEN role
- Enhanced Child and Adult DBS is required
- Proven ability to solve problems quickly and remain calm
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
