As a Care Worker in a specialist SEN school, you’ll be at the heart of creating a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment for pupils aged 2-19 with visual impairments, complex sensory needs, and physical disabilities. Your role is both rewarding and essential — supporting not just learning, but every aspect of a child’s school life.
This is a highly interactive and hands-on role where no two days are the same. One moment you may be supporting a pupil with mobility or using specialist equipment like hoists or sensory tools; the next, you might be encouraging a young person to engage in a classroom activity, access adapted learning materials, or participate in creative sessions.
You’ll also support pupils during breaktimes, mealtimes, and transitions, ensuring their comfort, dignity, and safety at all times. Working closely with a supportive team of teachers, therapists, and healthcare professionals, you'll help deliver holistic care plans tailored to each child’s unique needs.
As a Care Assistant , you will be required to provide personal care and manual handling whilst providing support to students with visual and hearing impairments, PMLD and non-verbal Autism.
A Care Assistant you will be expected to:- Provide high-quality personal care, including support with toileting, feeding, dressing, and hygiene
- Assist pupils with mobility needs, including use of wheelchairs, hoists, standing frames, and walking aids
- Support pupils with visual impairments in navigating the school environment safely and confidently
- Encourage and facilitate pupil participation in sensory-based and therapeutic activities
- Monitor pupils’ well-being and alert appropriate staff to any changes in behaviour, mood, or physical health
- Provide emotional support and reassurance to pupils who may experience anxiety, frustration, or communication barriers
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to reviews of individual care and support plans
- Work collaboratively with teaching staff, therapists, families, and external professionals to provide consistent and holistic support
- Participate in regular training, supervision, and school development activities to enhance skills and understanding of complex needs
- Support with lunchtime supervision and break duties, promoting positive social interaction and safe play
- Help prepare specialist equipment and resources, ensuring they are cleaned, stored, and used correctly
- Uphold safeguarding responsibilities and follow all health and safety, equality, and behaviour management policies
