Teaching Assistant – (Special Educational Needs Unit)
Location: Barnet, North London
Hours: Full-Time, Term Time Only (Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 3:30pm)
Contract Type: Long-term with potential for permanent placement
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: £96 - £115 per day
DBS Requirement: Must have an Enhanced DBS (on the Update Service or willing to obtain)We are currently seeking a Teaching Assistant to join a nurturing and inclusive SEN unit within a mainstream primary school in Barnet. This full-time position is ideal for someone with a passion for supporting children with special educational needs, particularly those with autism, speech and language difficulties, sensory needs, and social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) challenges.
The successful Teaching Assistant will play a crucial role in helping pupils develop academically, socially, and emotionally, both in small group settings and on a one-to-one basis. You will be joining a dedicated team who are committed to providing a supportive, structured, and caring learning environment for every child.
About the SEN Unit:
A well-established, purpose-built provision within a mainstream primary school in Barnet.
Supports children across KS1 and KS2 with EHCPs and a range of complex needs.
Small class sizes with a high adult-to-pupil ratio.
A focus on individual learning plans, life skills, and emotional regulation.
A collaborative and experienced SEND team with excellent staff support.
Key Responsibilities of the SEN TA:
Supporting pupils with autism, learning difficulties, sensory processing needs, and SEMH.
Assisting in delivering individualised education plans and structured interventions.
Working 1:1 or in small groups to help pupils access the curriculum at their own pace.
Promoting positive behaviour and supporting emotional regulation strategies.
Using visual aids, PECS, Makaton, and other communication tools where appropriate.
Supporting personal care or mobility needs, depending on individual pupils.
Liaising with class teachers, SENCOs, therapists, and parents as part of a multi-disciplinary approach.
Maintaining detailed records and progress notes in collaboration with the teaching team.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant, and working with children with SEND, ideally in a school or care setting.
A compassionate, patient, and adaptable nature.
Confidence using strategies such as TEACCH, Zones of Regulation, and sensory circuits (training can be provided).
An understanding of safeguarding, child protection, and inclusive practice.
A strong team ethic, good communication skills, and the ability to take initiative.
Requirements:
Must hold a valid Enhanced DBS certificate (on the Update Service or willing to apply).
Right to work in the UK.
Able to commit to a full-time, term-time only schedule (8:30am – 3:30pm).
At least two references from recent childcare, education, or care roles.
