Job Type: 8:30am – 4:00pm
Location: Merton
Salary: £96–£110 Per DayThe Role: Special Needs Teaching Assistant – Merton
We are seeking a flexible and experienced Special Needs Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN school in Merton, supporting pupils across Primary level. This is a float role, providing support where needed across multiple classrooms, working with children who have a range of complex needs including autism, physical disabilities, and severe or profound learning difficulties.
You will play a vital role in supporting pupils' learning, development, and wellbeing both in 1:1 and small group settings. The position is ideal for someone who thrives in a varied, dynamic environment and has a genuine passion for working with children with special educational needs.
A Special Needs Teaching Assistant will be expected to:
- Provide 1:1 and small group support, tailored to pupils with autism, complex learning needs, and physical disabilities
- Support across multiple classrooms, adapting quickly to different teams, students, and learning plans
- Assist with personal care, feeding, and mobility, where required
- Implement individual education plans and behaviour support strategies under the guidance of teachers and therapists
- Promote communication, emotional regulation, independence, and positive interaction
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to pupil progress tracking
- Foster a safe, inclusive, and structured learning environment
Qualifications and requirements –Special Needs Teaching Assistant – Merton
- Proven experience supporting children or young people with SEN, including autism, physical needs, and complex learning difficulties
- Comfortable with personal care and supporting physical or medical needs
- Strong behaviour management skills and a calm, adaptable approach
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work across multiple class teams
- High levels of patience, resilience, and emotional intelligence
- A sound understanding of safeguarding and SEND practices
