Location: Haringey, North London
Start Date: Immediate / As soon as possible
Contract: Full-time, long-term
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experienceWe are looking to appoint a dedicated and enthusiastic British Sign Language (BSL) Teaching Assistant to join a specialist Deaf school in Haringey. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with a strong commitment to supporting Deaf children and young people in their education and personal development. The role is well-suited to candidates who are passionate about inclusive education and who can bring energy, empathy, and strong communication skills to the classroom environment.
As a BSL Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with pupils who use BSL as their primary mode of communication, supporting them to access the curriculum and participate fully in school life. You will collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to provide tailored assistance that meets the diverse needs of each learner.
Key Responsibilities
Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils using BSL to facilitate learning and understanding.
Work alongside class teachers to deliver engaging and accessible lessons, ensuring pupils can fully participate.
Adapt resources and materials where necessary to suit pupils’ individual needs and communication styles.
Support pupils with both academic learning and social-emotional development, encouraging independence and self-esteem.
Assist with classroom management, organisation, and the creation of a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Act as a role model for pupils, demonstrating respect, patience, and understanding at all times.
Liaise effectively with staff, parents, and external professionals to ensure continuity of support.
Uphold safeguarding, wellbeing, and equality standards across all aspects of the role.
Candidate Requirements
Fluency in British Sign Language (BSL) is essential for this role.
Previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, or in a similar support role within education.
Experience working with Deaf children or young people is highly desirable.
Ability to build strong relationships with pupils, encouraging engagement and positive behaviour.
Good organisational skills with the ability to adapt to changing needs in a busy school environment.
A caring, supportive, and resilient nature, with a genuine passion for working with children.
Immediate availability is required.
