Job Title: Special Needs Teaching Assistant
Job Type: 8:30am – 4pm
Location: Newham
Salary: £96–£110 Per dayThe Role: Special Needs Teaching Assistant – Newham
As a Special Needs Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting secondary-aged pupils within a Pupil Referral Unit in Newham. This setting caters to students with a range of Special Educational Needs , including Autism, ADHD, SEMH and behavioural challenges. You will work both one-to-one and in small groups to help students re-engage with learning, regulate behaviour, and make academic and personal progress.
You will be part of a committed and experienced team within a highly supportive PRU environment, working closely with teachers, therapists, and behavioural specialists to provide holistic, student-centred support tailored to individual needs.
A Special Needs Teaching Assistant will be expected to:
• Support students with SEN and challenging behaviour in a PRU setting
• Help deliver targeted interventions focusing on literacy, numeracy, and emotional regulation
• Use de-escalation strategies and promote positive behaviour in line with the school's behaviour management policy
• Build trusting relationships with pupils to foster emotional well-being and encourage engagement
• Adapt classroom activities to suit individual learning and behavioural needs
• Provide ongoing feedback to teaching staff and contribute to pupil reports and reviews
• Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals
• Encourage personal development, resilience, and independence in pupilsQualifications and Requirements – Special Needs Teaching Assistant – Newham
• Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEN and behavioural needs
• Confidence working with challenging behaviour and implementing behaviour management strategies
• Enhanced DBS is essential
• Ability to remain calm, patient, and flexible under pressure
