The Role: Special Needs Teaching Assistant – Barking and Dagenham  

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic SEN Teaching Assistant to join our team, supporting children with autism, ADHD, and challenging behaviour. This role is ideal for someone with a genuine passion for helping children thrive. You’ll work closely with class teachers and therapists to provide one-to-one and small group support, using tailored strategies to promote engagement, emotional regulation, and learning. Patience, creativity, and a positive approach are key, as you'll help pupils navigate their daily routines, develop social skills, and reach their individual goals. If you’re resilient, compassionate, and love making a difference in young lives, we’d love to hear from you.

A Special Needs Teaching Assistant will be expected to:

  • Provide one-on-one assistance to students with Autism, ADHD and Challenging Behaviour
  • Lead structured interventions to improve student attainment and communication skills
  • Adapt teaching materials and methods to suit individual learning styles and abilities
  • Promote positive behaviour and help manage challenging behaviour in line with school policies.
  • Provide emotional support and encourage social interaction.
  • Observe and record progress, challenges, and achievements.
  • Report concerns to the teacher or SENCO
  • Encourage independence and build student confidence

Qualifications and requirements – Special Needs Teaching Assistant – Barking and Dagenham

  • Experience in a similar role
  • Experience working with SEND needs
  • Enhanced DBS is required
  • Proven ability to solve problems quickly and remain calm
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
