Job Title: SEMH Teaching Assistant
Job Type: 8:30am -4pm, September Start
Location: Southwark
Salary: £96-£110 per day
The Role: SEMH Teaching Assistant – Southwark
In this role, you will support pupils with a range of social, emotional, and mental health needs, including anxiety, low mood, attachment difficulties, and trauma. Working both 1:1 and in small groups, you will help children build confidence, develop emotional resilience, and re-engage with their learning. You’ll play a key role in creating a nurturing, inclusive, and trauma-informed classroom environment, assisting teachers in delivering tailored support and implementing strategies to promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation. As a trusted adult, you will build strong, supportive relationships with pupils and work closely with the wider pastoral and SEND teams to monitor progress and contribute to individual support plans.
A SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will be expected to:
- Support pupils with a range of SEMH needs, including anxiety, low mood, attachment difficulties, and trauma
- Work 1:1 and in small groups to help children build confidence, develop coping strategies, and engage with learning
- Support teachers in delivering a nurturing, inclusive, and trauma-informed classroom environment
- Help implement behaviour and emotional regulation strategies tailored to individual needs
- Act as a trusted adult, building strong, positive relationships with pupils
- Collaborate with pastoral and SEND teams to monitor progress and contribute to personalised plans
Qualifications and requirements – SEMH Teaching Assistant – Southwark
- Have experience supporting children or young people with mental health difficulties in an educational or care setting
- Be emotionally intelligent, calm under pressure, and confident in managing challenging behaviour
- Understand the importance of boundaries, consistency, and patience when supporting vulnerable learners
- Be a team player with strong communication skills and a commitment to safeguarding
- Relevant Mental Health training is highly desirable
